Dixie National Forest - Saddle Fire Update

PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle Fire remains at 1,540 acres. Firefighters are making excellent progress on all sections of the fire and the containment is now 21 percent.

Crews continue to use ground and aerial ignition operations as well as direct and indirect line construction. These operations are removing fuels from the path of the fire in order to prevent the fire from spreading east toward the Pine Valley Recreation Area and south toward the Dammeron Valley area, while still providing protection to the Pine Valley community.

The fire control strategy in Forsyth Canyon includes indirect firing operations using constructed fire lines and natural barriers in the canyon and on the main ridge as well as utilizing a 2005 fire scar to the south.

There are 711 personnel, along with engines, heavy equipment and aircraft helping to suppress the fire. Besides direct attack, day crews improved indirect lines while night crews conducted area patrols and as needed assisted in firing operations.

The fire remains most active in the Lloyd and Forsyth canyons. Voluntary evacuations remain in place for Pine Valley, and the road into Pine Valley is only open to property owners.

The Pine Valley Recreation Area in the Dixie National Forest remains under an indefinite area closure to all uses until the order is rescinded. PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle Fire grew by 141 acres to 1,470 acres yesterday.  Firefighters continue to make progress on all sections of the Saddle fire.

Fire crews are using ground and aerial ignition operations, including a plastic sphere dispenser (http://www.fs.fed.us/eng/aerial_ign/plsphere/describe.htm) to remove fuels from the path of the fire in order to prevent the fire from spreading eastwardly toward the Pine Valley Recreation Area and south towards Dammeron Valley area.

An attack strategy in Forsyth Canyon includes indirect firing operations using control lines in Forsyth Canyon, natural barriers on the main ridge, and utilizing the 2005 Dammeron fire scare to the south.

There are 731 personnel, engines, heavy equipment and aircraft helping to suppress the fire. The Saddle fire remains at five percent contained. Besides direct attack, day crews improved fuel breaks and scouted the terrain, while night crews patrolled and monitored the fire area to pick up any spot fires.

The fire remains most active in the Lloyd and Forsyth canyons. Voluntary evacuations remain in place for Pine Valley, and the road into Pine Valley is open to property owners at this time.

Dixie National Forest - Saddle Fire Update

PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle Fire gained 95 acres and is now at 1,329 acres with five percent containment. 

Yesterday firefighters directly attacked the western portion of the fire.  Firefighters are now using aerial ignition operations to check the fire on the southeast side on the main ridge on the west of the avalanche chute in Forsyth Canyon.  Air tankers and heavy helicopters used thousands of gallons of retardant and water to prevent the fire from moving onto the southern face of Saddle Mountain.

Saddle Fire managers will hold a fire operations update meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at the Central Fire Station, 155 East Center Street, Central, Utah.

There are 675 firefighters and supporting resources assigned to the incident, fighting the fire day and night. While day crews improve fuel breaks and scout the terrain, night crews, including engines and hotshot crews patrol areas threatened by the fire, prepared to pick up spot fires and encroaching flames if needed.

The fire remains most active in the Lloyd and Forsyth canyons, burning mostly in the downed logs and underbrush in the conifer stands. Backing fires have advanced the perimeter a little closer to the fuel breaks around Pine Valley.  Fire growth will continue to the east, northeast and southeast in Lloyd Canyon with limited spread to the northwest and west. Areas with live, green oak and mahogany are limiting the spread of the fire.

Property owners are still asked by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to voluntarily evacuate Pine Valley, limiting the number of people in the area threatened by fire. Fire crews identified 500 properties that are threatened.

Those that do not own property in Pine Valley are asked to stay clear of the area. Houndstongue is a Danger to Livestock and your Socks!

Houndstongue is a beautiful biennial that grows along the River Parkway in Pine Valley and in other places with disturbed soil.  It was introduced from Europe and has rough leaves that resemble a hound's tongue.  Growing 1 to 4 feet tall in its second year, Houndstongue forms small burrs that stick to dogs, livestock and clothing.  People often disregard it growing in their yards until they discover the burrs which have spread widely by that time.

Houndstongue is toxic, containing a liver damaging alkaloid.  Sheep, cattle and horses may die up to six months after consuming Houndstongue.

Keep an eye open for this plant!  It is not desirable in our yards or in the valley.

Dixie National Forest - Saddle Fire Update

PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle Fire grew to 1,234 acres Sunday, while air tankers and heavy helicopters used 22,000 gallons of retardant Saturday to prevent the fire from moving onto the southern face of the Saddle Mountain, helping firefighters focus on suppressing the fire before it can impact the town of Pine Valley.

The aerial bombardment painted a line of retardant on the south ridges similar to what was done on the southwest portion of the mountain a week ago.

Additionally, helicopters dropped water directly on the fire to slow it down and giving firefighters an added edge in preparing suppression efforts, in an ongoing effort to confine the fire to as little of the mountain as possible. With the fire burning in areas filled with unnecessary risk and hazards to firefighters, fire managers believe a significant moisture event is needed for multiple days to extinguish the blaze.

Fire crews work day and night, as personnel grew to 625 firefighters and supporting resources. While day crews improve fuel breaks and scout the terrain, night crews, including engines and hotshots patrol areas threatened by the fire, prepared to pick up spot fires and encroaching flames if needed.

Property owners are still asked by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to voluntarily evacuate Pine Valley, limiting the number of people in the area threatened by fire. Fire crews identified 500 properties that are threatened.

Fire Information: Posted at the following locations: Central Fire Station, Veyo Market, Veyo Sinclair Station, Veyo Pies, Veyo Family Dollar, Enterprise Family Dollar, Marv’s (Enterprise), Verla’s Country Café (Enterprise), Carter’s Market (Enterprise), Pine Valley Recreation Area, Pine Valley Heritage Center, Pine Valley Post Office, Enterprise Sinclair Station, Enterprise Post Office, and the Enterprise Ace True Value Hardware Store.

Cause: Started by a lightning strike, June 13, 2016.

Location: Approximately 2.5 miles southwest from the town of Pine Valley in the Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness of the Dixie National Forest, Pine Valley Ranger District.

Incident Management: Bill Hahnenberg, Incident Commander with the National Incident Management Organization along with the Color Country Interagency Type 3 Incident Management Team.

Fire Size: 1,234 acres

Evacuations: Washington County Sheriffs Office has issued a voluntary evacuation order for the town of Pine Valley. Property owners are encouraged to be prepared to evacuate if fire conditions change.

Estimated Costs to Date: $3.6 million

Closures: Pine Valley Recreation Area, Dixie National Forest; Baker Reservoir (closed to the public); Grass Valley Road from Pinto to Pine Valley; Mahogany Bench Road; entry to the town of Pine Valley is restricted to property owners. Structures Threatened: 500 residents and 500 other structures. No structures have been destroyed.

Percent Contained: 5 percent.

Fuels/terrain: Heavy dead and downed timber, brush, surrounded by steep, rugged and rocky terrain.

Fire Resources Assigned: 6 Type I Interagency Hotshot Crews; 4 Type II handcrews; 8 Type II initial attack crews; 2 Type I Helicopter; 3 Type III Helicopters; 28 engines; 1 dozer; 3 water tender; and 1 air attack. 611 total personnel assigned.

Injuries: 2 injuries to date, both minor heat related illnesses.
