Dixie National Forest - Saddle Fire Update
PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle fire is 2,296 acres and 45
percent contained.
After consultation with the Forest
Service and Fire officials, the Washington County Commission and the Sheriff
will lift all evacuation orders in the Pine Valley area, effective July 12,
2016, at 0800 hours. Portions of the Pine Valley Wilderness area still remain
closed to public access due to the fire and public safety concerns.
Fire personnel will still be in the
area as they continue to monitor and strengthen control lines. Residents
and visitors coming to the area are asked to monitor fire activity, and use
caution around working fire resources.
The
Saddle Fire experienced minimal control problems yesterday. A warm, dry air
mass has moved over the fire with no moisture in the forecast for this upcoming
week. There will still be
smoke in the area from fire activity within fire control lines south of Lloyd's
Canyon. Smoke will remain visible for several days.
Crews
are continuing to mop up and extinguish hot spots along accessible areas of the
fire perimeter. Aircraft continues to keep the fire in accessible areas checked
using fire retardant. Personnel continue to assess the need for structure
protection in the community of Pine Valley.
There is
a Saddle Fire public meeting this evening, Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at 7 p.m. at
the Pine Valley Fire Station, 680 East Main Street in Pine Valley.
There is
still a temporary flight restriction (TFR) in the fire area. Non-cooperating
aircraft is kept out of the fire area due to the nature of aerial fire
management activities for both the safety of fire personnel and the public. This
includes Unmanned Aircraft Systems or drones.
Under

Dixie National Forest - Saddle Fire Update
PINE VALLEY, Utah – The Saddle fire is 2,295 acres and 45
percent contained.
The
Saddle Fire public meeting has been changed from Monday evening to Tuesday,
July 12, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Pine Valley Fire Station, 680 East Main Street
in Pine Valley. The date change was made in order to meet the needs of the Pine
Valley community.
The
Saddle Fire experienced minimal control issues despite wind gusts above 30 mph
yesterday due to the hard work put in by both our ground and aerial resources. Members
of nearby communities can expect to see continued fire activity and smoke
impacts from unburned islands of vegetation being consumed within the fire
perimeter.
Crews
are beginning to mop up and extinguish hot spots along accessible areas of the
fire perimeter. Aerial resources continue to monitor inaccessible areas of the
fire using fire retardant when needed to prevent further spread. Fire resources
continue to monitor direct and indirect control lines near the Pine Valley
community.
At
approximately 6:30 p.m. last night the Saddle Fire experienced a fifth drone
intrusion on the temporary flight restriction (TFR) in the fire area. The
current TFR has a radius of five nautical miles around a centralized point on
the fire. Non-cooperating aircraft is kept out of the fire area due to the
nature of aerial fire management activities for both the safety of fire
personnel and the public.
Significant
portions of the fire are unable to be staffed by ground firefighters due to
hazardous terrain. Aerial resources, such as helicopters, have been used to
monitor these sites and treat as necessary. Due to the risk drones introduce,
all aerial operations cease when one is spotted and do not resume until it is
determined safe to continue operations. We encourage the public to learn about
Unmanned Aircraft System regulations and safe use of drones by visiting www.knowbeforeyoufly.org. If you
fly, we can’t
There
are 211 personnel assigned. Resources include hand crews, fire engines, heavy
equipment and aircraft.
Voluntary
evacuations are currently in place in Pine Valley south on Lloyd Canyon Drive
at the Mahogany Lane intersection and south on Oakridge Drive and Mahogany
Lane. Closures in the Pine Valley Recreation area, including campgrounds, are
being lifted but trails in the immediate fire area will remain closed to the
public.

Dixie National Forest – 5th Drone Intrusion- July 10, 2016
PINE VALLEY, Utah – A fifth incident
of the public using drones in the Saddle Fire area halted aircraft operations
around 6:30pm this evening. There is a five mile temporary flight restriction
currently over the Saddle Fire making it illegal to fly a drone in the area.
Everyone
is reminded to never fly drones over a wildfire. If you fly, we can’t.
Because
of the inaccessibility of the fire perimeter, fire managers utilize aircraft to
support firefighters in challenging areas.
Per
the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations, 43 CFR 9212.1(f), it is illegal to resist
or interfere with the efforts of firefighter(s) to extinguish a fire. The Utah
Legislature passed HB126 which became law last month. The law makes it a
misdemeanor to fly drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) in a prohibited area, and
it is a felony if a drone collides with firefighting equipment.
Additionally,
today firefighters made some progress with containment now at 45% with a total
of 2291 acres. A public fire information meeting will be held on Tuesday, July
12th at 7pm at the Pine Valley Fire Station at 680 East Main Street,
Pine Valley, UT.

percent contained.
A
community meeting regarding the status of the Saddle Fire will be held Monday,
July 11, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Pine Valley Fire Station, 680 East Main Street
in Pine Valley.
Unmanned
Aircraft Systems (Drones) continue to be a problem on the Saddle Fire. Each
time a drone is sighted in the fire area all air operations are grounded until
it is determined safe to fly again. We encourage the public to learn about
Unmanned Aircraft System regulations and safe use of drones by visiting www.knowbeforeyoufly.org. If you
fly, we can’t and the safety of our firefighters is greatly affected.
Unburned
islands of vegetation continue to burn inside of current control lines. Members
of nearby communities can expect to see continued fire activity and smoke
impacts. Increased fire behavior may occur today with the passing cold front
producing strong erratic winds.
Crews
are beginning to mop up and extinguish hot spots along accessible areas of the
fire perimeter. Aerial resources continue to monitor inaccessible areas of the
fire using fire retardant to keep it from spreading beyond the natural barriers
on the main ridge south of Pine Valley and the 2005 Dammeron fire scar. Fire
resources continue to monitor direct and indirect control lines around the north
and west portions of the fire near the Pine Valley community.
There
are 228 personnel assigned. Resources include hand crews, fire engines, heavy
equipment and aircraft.
Voluntary
evacuations are still in place in Pine Valley south on Lloyd Canyon Drive at
the Mahogany Lane intersection and south on Oakridge Drive and Mahogany Lane.

Valley Recreation Area in the Dixie National Forest remains closed to public
